Double Trailers Definition
A double trailer, also known as a double trailer truck, is a standard semi-truck and trailer with a second trailer attached. Doubler-trailers are an option to move large amounts of cargo over long distances. Some double-trailer transports require specialized permits, as they pose increased safety risks.
Types of Double Trailer Trucks
Types of double-trailer trucks:
Turnpike double trucks:
- Two (2) 48-foot trailers.
- Maximum weight: 147,000 lbs.
Rock Mountain double trucks:
- One (1) 40-to-53 foot trailer.
- One (1) 28.5 foot trailer.
- Maximum weight: 129,000 lbs.
- Pup trailer: the smaller second trailer
Canada Turnpike double trucks:
- Two (2) 53 foot trailers. (As opposed to 48-foot in the United States.)
