Pilot cars and escort vehicles must be pickup trucks or passenger cars. It must have an "OVERSIZE LOAD" sign, measuring five ′ wide by one ′ tall, and at least one rotating or flashing amber light installed atop the vehicle visible from at least 500′. We ensure our pilot vehicles have safety equipment, signage, and flags. When the rear overhang exceeds 4 feet, the rearmost point of the load must display a flag during the day and a red light or lantern at night. Overwidth or over-length loads require flags at each corner of the load and on the widest point on each side when the load extends past the corner flags.
When is a load regarded as an "Oversized Load" in Michigan? When the dimensions are or exceed:
- Width: 8 feet 6" or 8 feet on non-designated highways
- Height: 13 feet 6"
- Length: 65 feet for truck-Semi-trailers
- Overhang: 3 feet at the front, and for the rear, any length up to the maximum legal vehicle length.

Oversized and Overweight Regulations in Michigan
Escort or pilot cars are required for heavy-haul or oversized loads if:

Weight:
- A pilot car is unnecessary for overweight loads if the vehicle can maintain minimum speeds.
