Rhode Island Pilot Car and Escort Vehicle Company

RHODE ISLAND PILOT CAR ESCORT SERVICES

Nationwide Transport Services provides premium pilot car services across every part of Rhode Island. Our pilot cars and drivers have the proper credentials and certifications. Despite being the smallest state, Rhode Island has a long-rugged coastline, making navigating oversized loads difficult. Our drivers boast years of experience navigating the state's tricky routes, guaranteeing a quick and safe transit for your load. Little Rhoddy is known for its vibrant boating scene, which we have been serving for over a decade, moving boats of all sizes across the state. We pick up and deliver your load to and from all 39 state municipalities, including Providence, Newport, Warwick, and Cranston. Our specialists plan and handle every step of the process for a smooth, effortless experience for our clients.

Pilot and escort vehicles are crucial for oversized transport, ensuring road safety and allowing minimal transit times. Our pilot car services include conducting route surveys, acquiring permits and insurance covers, and escorting the load during transit. The Rhode Island Department of Transportation is responsible for issuing oversized permits within the state. The permits are valid for five days, and the operating times are set from thirty minutes before sunrise to thirty minutes after sunset on weekdays, with no travel on weekends.

Rhode Island Pilot Car Regulations

Rhode Island requires that pilot and escort vehicles be at least as large as a compact car. The cars must display a roof or bumper-mounted "OVERSIZED LOAD" sign that measures at least 5 feet long and 12 inches high with a yellow background and black letters at least 10 inches tall and no less than 1 1/2 inches wide. The vehicle's corners must have red or orange safety flags, which are a minimum of 18 inches long and mounted at a 40 to 70-degree angle. The driver and passenger doors must have company identification signs displaying the company's name and phone number. Lighting requirements stipulate that each vehicle have a horizontal rotating or strobe amber-colored flashing light, with 360-degree angle visibility from a minimum of 500 feet. The vehicles must also have a CB radio or 2-way communication device to keep constant contact with the towing vehicle.

In Rhode Island, the maximum legal dimensions before a permit is necessary are:

  • Length: On Interstates and designated highways, 53 feet for semitrailers, and 48 feet on other roads.
  • Overhang: 3 feet at the front and 6 feet at the rear.
  • Width: 8 feet 6 inches.
  • Height: 13 feet 6 inches.
  • Weight: 80,000 gross vehicle weight.
